The mind-body connection refers to the relationship between our thoughts, emotions, and physical health. This connection is a fundamental part of human existence, as it influences how we experience the world around us and interact with it. In this blog post, we will explore what the mind-body connection is, how it works, and the implications it has for our overall health and wellbeing.
THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION CHANGED THE TRAJECTORY OF MY HEALING JOURNEY
If you read my pre and post healing story from Ankylosing Spondylitis and Chronic Iritis then you know how gaining an understanding of the mind-body connection changed the trajectory of my healing journey. Without it I would not be where I am today.
You can feed your body the most nutrient dense foods in the world and give up all the things we are told will make us sick (don’t get me wrong this is certainly important for overall health). However, if you are not addressing your inner world then healing will never fully come to fruition.
What I realized is that struggling with chronic illness is one of the most valuable gifts I was ever given. When you do this work it is not just your physical symptoms that improve or disappear but your entire life changes and for the better.
WHAT IS THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION
At its core, the mind-body connection is based on the idea that our thoughts and emotions can impact our physical health. For example, when we experience stress, our body responds by releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones can increase heart rate, blood pressure, and other physical symptoms. Similarly, when we experience positive emotions like happiness or love, our body releases endorphins, which can lead to feelings of euphoria and reduced pain.
TWO SIMPLE EXAMPLES
Here are two examples I share with new coaching clients or those not familiar with the mind-body connection to help them understand. The first is to recall the last time you saw a commercial or movie that brought tears to your eyes. In the movie, a sappy event which was an emotional stimulus caused tears to flow. The second example is to close your eyes and imagine sucking on a sour lemon slice. If you are doing this exercise now I have a feeling your mouth is watering. Mine sure is! Again, a thought becomes a physical response. These are two perfect examples to explain how our emotions and thoughts can play a role in a physical response from our body.
THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION WORKING IN REVERSE
The mind-body connection also works in reverse, as our physical health impacts our thoughts and emotions. For example, if we are experiencing chronic pain or illness, this can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and stress. Conversely, when we take care of our physical health through activities like exercise and proper nutrition, we can experience improved mood and emotional well-being.
If you suffer from chronic pain like I did and like the majority of my coaching clients do then you know you can get stuck in a vicious cycle of pain. Pain creates fear, frustration, hopelessness, anxiety etc. And these feelings lead to more pain. I was there once too. Suffering from chronic pain or chronic conditions is very challenging. However, the mind-body connection is the way out of pain and into a fulfilling, healthy life. It is never too late to start doing this work. It does not matter if you have been in pain or suffering from a chronic condition for a few months or for years. The mind-body connection can help!
HOW EXACTLY DOES THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION WORK?
So, how does the mind-body connection work? It’s complicated! But to keep it simple our thoughts and emotions are processed by the brain, which then sends signals to the rest of our body through the nervous system. These signals can impact our body’s physiological responses, such as heart rate, blood pressure, hormone levels which can lead to a whole host of physical symptoms.
I truly believe if anyone suffering from a chronic condition addressed the mind-body connection and their nervous system their symptoms would drastically improve. We have so many names for the symptoms we experience in our modern world. This makes it even more difficult for people to realize the answer to true health and healing is within them and not found in a pill.
Additionally, our thoughts and emotions can also impact our behavior, which in turn impacts our physical health. When you are in pain or not feeling well, you won’t feel like doing all the things that would make you feel better. It can be difficult to just get yourself out of bed. Again, a vicious cycle.
The mind-body connection has significant implications for our overall health and wellbeing. When we are aware of this connection and work to cultivate positive thoughts and emotions, we can experience improved physical health, reduced stress, and enhanced emotional wellbeing. Conversely, when we experience negative thoughts and emotions, this can lead to a range of physical and mental health issues.
THE WORK DOES NOT END
And it’s unfortunately not that simple. I would be lying to you if I said it was. It takes work! I still do this work daily. I consider myself healed from two autoimmune conditions but the work is not finished. I am a human living the human experience and so are you. There will always be challenges. But, once we are educated and equipped with certain tools we can overcome just about anything.
Thinking positive thoughts alone will not get you pain or symptoms free. The first and most important step is to become more aware. Becoming more aware of your thoughts is something you can start to do today! Our thoughts are like habits, making it easy to think negatively automatically. If we acknowledge our thoughts or notice them we put control back into our hands to work on changing our thoughts from negative to something more positive. This will serve us in a much bigger way.
In conclusion, the mind-body connection is a fundamental part of human existence, as it impacts how we experience the world around us and interact with it. By cultivating a positive mind-body connection through practices like mindfulness, physical activity, and social support, we can experience improved physical and emotional wellbeing, reduced stress, and enhanced overall health.
